The farewell
When Billie's family learns that their beloved grandmother Nai Nai is badly sick in cancer and only has weeks left to live, they decide not to tell Nai Nai. The Chinese tradition is not to worry the older relative more than necessary, something that American-born Billie has a hard time accepting. They decide to organize a pretend wedding as a pretext for the whole family to gather and say goodbye. The drama comedy The Farewell is a moving depiction of how two different cultures deal with life's difficult issues when the individualistic Western world meets the family-oriented East. In the lead role, we see Awkwafina, who was awarded with a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a comedy. The film was also nominated for both a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for best film in foreign language.
