Son of Rambow

7 yrs 92 minutes 2007 7.0

The wayward comedy and finely-tuned drama Son of Rambow is an odd portrayal of British childhood and friendship that takes place during a hot and long summer in the early 1980s. Two school boys, both outsiders from different social backgrounds, are inspired by the movies Rambo and First blood to do their own movie. Will is a shy kid who are brought up in a strictly religious environment where modern phenomena’s like television and films are forbidden. One day Lee Carter, the school bully, shows him an old recording of the first Rambo movie, which wakens Will’s wild imagination. The two boys decide to make a new adaptation of the movie, which leads them to exciting adventures, an unexpected friendship and newfound insights. “It’s not entirely easy to categorize the British movie Son of Rambow. Equal parts British childhood adaptation – like This is England – as American High School Movie – like Ferris Bueller’s day off or Pretty in pink – as 90’s indiemovies – like Wes Anderson’s Rushmore but placed in England”, Hynek Pallas writes in Svenska Dagbladet and rates the movie 5 out of 6.
