This film is based on William Shakespeare's tragedy about General Macbeth. The Scottish general Macbeth has been obsessed with the idea of becoming the new king of Scotland. His wife, Lady Macbeth, persuades him and before he knows it he is going away to overthrow the current King Duncan. Jan Söderqvist gives the film the second highest rating in SvD as it is "visually magnificent [...] and intelligently written" and claims that the classical monologues are "cunningly and effectively staged". Macbeth was nominated for the Palm d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
