Ewa Cybulski and her sister Magda decide to find happiness on the other side of the Atlantic, as so many others did in the early 20th century. When they arrive at Ellis Island doctors discover that Magda is ill and must be held in quarantine. Ewa is forced to leave her sister and go out on Manhattan's unsafe streets. She quickly falls for the charming but cruel Bruno who forces her to prostitution. When Ewa meets Bruno's cousin Orlando, a good-hearted magician, she becomes madly in love with him and Orlando becomes her only chance to escape the nightmare she’s in. The film was nominated for the Golden Palm in Cannes 2013.
