The title is taken from Victor Hugo's 150-year-old novel, where the same problems described there are still reality in some of the Paris suburbs today. We meet the police Stéphane who joins a police force in the suburb of Montfermeil. He quickly realizes that there are major conflicts between the various gangs in the area and his new colleagues do not duck to maintain order. When an intervention is filmed, there is a risk that a major conflict will blossom and affect the entire country. The film has been Oscar-nominated in the category of Best International Film. In Cannes it was awarded with the jury award and was Golden Globe nominated for best non-English-language film.
