Dancer Ema (Mariana Di Girólamo) and her partner Gastón (Gael García Bernal) are suffering from a traumatic experience. Together they adopted a boy who proved impossible for them to handle and they had to return him to the authorities. They both suffer severely from the feeling of failure and the loss of happiness. Their relationship has become full of verbal attacks on each other's weaknesses, and Ema manages the pain by living out her frustration dancing and through casual sexual encounters. Fredrik Sahlin at SVT's Kulturnyheterna describes director Pablo Larraín's film "more as a suggestive state than a regular story".
