The Swan
Icelandic childhood drama based on Guðbergur Bergsson's novel from 1991. During the summer vacation, nine-year-old Sól (Grima Valsdóttir) is sent to unknown relatives to work on their farm. Her closest confidant is Jón (Thor Kristjansson), who reads his poetry to her. When the farmer's daughter, who has studied abroad for a period, comes back, the dynamics of the farm change and a power struggle begins. The lead role in The Swan was hailed for her achievements: “Grima Valsdóttir is outstanding as Sól. Through her wise, thoughtful eyes, she absorbs her surroundings to silently puzzle together the enigmatic adult world", Sonya Helgesson in Nöjesguiden thought. The film was nominated for seven Edda awards - the Icelandic equivalent of Guldbaggen - when it arrived.
