Lone survivor is based on the failed operation in June 2005, which went under the code name Operation Red Wing. Four members of SEAL Team 10 were tasked with capturing the infamous Taliban leader Admad Shad. They find themselves ambushed and isolated from help while facing an entire army of Taliban warriors. Marcus Luttrell was the only one in the team that survived the mission and later wrote the book Lone survivor about their experiences. In Expressen, Mats Bråstedt compares the movie with Zero dark thirty: "While the story sometimes goes overboard and becomes a little too much of a tribute to macho men and tough things they do, Peter Berg's film is also tight and thrilling action with an almost documentary feel."
