Cold War

11 yrs 84 minutes 2018 7.5

In the 1950s communist Poland, pianist Wiktor meets singer Zula and they become passionately in love with each other. When the propaganda machine demands that they involve the state's message into their performances, Wiktor gets enough and flees to Paris while Zula is torn between her homeland and Wiktor. But the love for music and each other overcomes their different backgrounds and ties them together through time and geographical distance. Jeanette Gentele writes in SvD: "There is a purity in [director] Pawlikowski's film language that is reminiscent of geometric images where lines are crossed and separated. The relationships between the main characters are depicted in the same way - often wordless but with a clear direction together or apart. An art which only a true master can master". Cold War was nominated for three Oscars, for example, Best Achievement in Directing. Pawlikowski was also praised for his film at the Cannes Film Festival and received the award for Best Director, and the film was also nominated for the Palme d'Or
