In this week's newly released films, you'll find everything from unexpected music aboard Noah's famous ark, to action thriller with Morgan Freeman. Welcome to Thursday premieres!
We continue to complement our 'learning' category, and this time we present a conversation between filmmaker Howard Burton and philosophy professor Susan Wolf. The theme of the conversation is what is meaningful in our modern society. Meaningfulness is a contemplation on how love, the fulfillment of dreams, self-interest, and happiness interact to give life meaning.
In this animated version of the story of Noah's Ark, two musicians have sneaked on board, Vini and Tito. They decide to organize a big music competition and invite all the animals on board to participate, to keep spirits up until the violent rain subsides. Noah's Ark is a enjoyable movie with a 7-year age limit.
I Get Knocked Down is the story of the punk band Chumbawumba from Leeds. This 2021 documentary follows Dunstan Bruce, the band's vocalist, in his struggles with the fact that most things in life don’t go well. He is angry and frustrated with the state of affairs, so what does he do now? This is not only the previously untold story of Chumbawumba, but also Dunstan’s personal redemptive journey toward awakening, as well as a call to those who believe that activism is best carried out by someone else.
Japanese animation for adults has a fairly broad scope, and with Angel’s Egg (Tenshi no Tamago) we present an anime classic from 1985. In a dark and cold world, a young girl guards an egg of unknown origin and meets a boy who carries a cross. The film has been described as visual poetry, with the masterful director Mamoru Oshii at the helm.
Swinging Safari is a cheeky coming-of-age comedy from the depths of Australia. 14-year-old Jeff grows up on a street in the small town of Nobbys Beach in the 1970s, full of hormones and teenage angst. The sexual revolution of the 70s sweeps over the town, and in the midst of this, a 200-ton blue whale strands nearby. This wildly crazy story is funny and filled with many small period-accurate details, featuring the likes of Kylie Minogue and Guy Pearce in the roles.
In Thick as Thieves, we encounter Keith Ripley, an experienced thief, and Gabriel Martin, a younger aspiring thief. They are planning one last job so that the elder can pay his debt to the Russian mafia. Police officer Weber, who has been trying to catch Ripley for the past twenty years, takes up the chase. Morgan Freeman and Antonio Banderas star in this 2009 action thriller set in New York.
