During the ravages of the Black Death in the 1300s the knight Antonius Block faces Death, who has come to fetch him, on a beach. On Antony's proposal they start a game of chess. Death agrees to let him live as long as he is able to offer resistance in the game. With the Death constantly on his heels, Antonius meets Jof and Maria, and their son Michael, that partake in a circus act. They invite him for strawberries and milk in the forest, and Antonius will experience a moment of peace. He decides to save the life of the jesters by sacrificing his own... Ingmar Bergman's masterpiece received the jury's special prize at Cannes in 1957.
