Cinese puzzle is the director Cédric Klapisch's final film in the trilogy Spanish Apartment, built around the same characters trying to settle the puzzle of life, first as students in L'auberge espagnole, then as 30-year-olds in Russian Dolls, and finally in Chinese Puzzle, where they have to deal with their 40-year crisis. In this film heavy themes such as life crisis, divorce and infidelity are discussed in an easy and playful manner. Xavier, the center of this story, is a successful author in the middle of a divorce who decides to accompany his wife Wendy to New York, in order to be close to his children.
