Carmen & Lola

15 yrs 103 minutes 2018 7.1

We get to follow the two Roma teenagers Lola and Carmen who live in one of Madrid's suburbs. Sixteen-year-old Lola falls in love with her cousin's fiancée Carmen. Despite being raised in religious homes where they learned to be homophobic, they fall in love with each other. They keep their relationship secret and together they try to create a life in an environment that would never accept their love. But is love worth the risk of being displaced by one's family? In the QX magazine, reviewer Andreas Samuelsson writes that there is "an admirable stake in these heroines 'stubborn struggles to let love win over their families' age-old honorary cultures and the debutant protagonists convince." In DN Eva Geijerstam lifts actress Zaira Romero (Lola), "In her cautious but determined longing for freedom, the true meaning of the film arises." Nominated in several categories at the Cannes Film Festival 2019.
