Cunningham
The documentary Cunningham was released in connection with the iconic dancer Merce Cunningham's 100th birthday. The director Alla Kovgan's documentary depicts the lives and work of Cunningham and his life partner John Cage. We get to take part in archive material and new sets of his work. Together with some of the foremost dancers of our time, we see Jennifer Goggans, who was part of Cunningham's dance company for twelve years, recreate his most known choreographies. Cecilia Blomberg at Kulturnyheterna thinks that the documentary's strength lies in the fact that dance has been given such a clear role. She concludes her review with the text: “It's a wonderful feeling to see the dancers on a roof in New York with only the sky above. Like abstract characters moving across the flat roof. Freedom. Space."
